Biotechnology Council
Charge
The emphasis of the Biotechnology Council is to strengthen the biotechnology research, teaching and outreach of the entire university through cooperation with all of the academic units of the university, cooperative extension and industry. The Biotechnology Council recommends new programs and provides input to the director and the Vice President for Research and Economic Development on the most effective way to utilize available funds.
The Biotechnology Council represents the five academic colleges involved in biotechnology research at Iowa State University: Agriculture and Life Sciences, Human Sciences, Engineering, Liberal Arts and Sciences and Veterinary Medicine.

Activity
The Council annually reviews in detail 14 state-of-the-art instrumentation facilities that support the teaching and research of university and industry scientists. The Council works with the university community and the instrumentation facility managers to identify equipment needs that support university and industry research. A priority for the Council is to foster collaboration to fund the necessary instrumentation to keep the university at the cutting edge of biotechnology research.
Each year the Biotechnology Council reviews numerous applications from five academic colleges and more than 25 departments that request faculty startup funds to recruit new research faculty in molecular biology. Since the Council’s inception in 1984, it has made recommendations to hire and provided funds of over $13.9 million to hire 129 new biotechnology faculty.
Additionally, the Council annually reviews the bioethics, public education outreach, publication, faculty development grants, graduate fellowship awards and technology transfer programs of the Office of Biotechnology.
All of the programs listed are administered by the Office of Biotechnology.
