Charge

The ISU Lectures Program, funded by GSB and the Office of the Provost, is committed to the philosophy that the function of the university is to provide "a market place of ideas." Toward that end, the Committee on Lectures works to bring to campus a broad spectrum of lectures as well as cultural and artistic events. Committee members, selected to represent a cross-section of students, academic disciplines and administrative offices, evaluate the appropriateness of presenters and topics and determine which shall receive funding.

The Committee seeks to be open to a wide variety of programming requests and to be impartial in its consideration of them. Lectures Committee members are expected to have the vision and imagination to ensure that students have opportunities to learn, act and think in new ways.

The Provost appoints a faculty chair and at-large members to the Committee on Lectures as well as faculty members to chair the World Affairs Series, National Affairs Series, and FOCUS. The Committee on Lectures appoints up to four representatives to the World Affairs and National Affairs Committees. The Committee on Lectures also coordinates, reviews and approves speakers and events planned by those two committees. Membership on both Series planning committees and the FOCUS arts committee is open to all interested members of the university community.

GSB appoints 11 student members and at least two alternate members to the Committee on Lectures and a cabinet-level official acts as a liaison between the Committee and the student Senate. The Graduate and Professional Student Senate appoints two representatives, and the Memorial Union Student Union Board appoints one.

The Committee is composed of at least 28 voting members - 14 faculty and staff and 14 students - plus the Director who serves on an ex-officio basis. All of these are voting members, and 2 student chairs are elected from among these members.
